READER'S WORKSHOP
- Under Construction -
What is Reader's Workshop? - The Reading Workshop provides students with a supportive environment that involves them in authentic reading experiences that focus on the strengths and needs of each individual student. (Revisiting the Reading Workshop)
The Reading Workshop creates a classroom community that encourages risk taking, collaboration, independence, and reflection. Students will be engaged in their reading and take responsibility for their learning. (Day to Day Assessment in the Reading Workshop).
The main components are:
- the mini-lesson and read aloud
- independent reading and conferring
- response and reflection
- sharing
In third grade there is a greater focus on 'reading to learn', but that does not mean students no longer need reading instruction. We must teach our students to access content when they read as well as teach them strategies they need to better understand text and become more thoughtful readers. (Strategies that Work)
Our reading block schedule will look like this: (changes may occur)
8:30-9:00 - Read-aloud/shared reading/core program
9:00-9:45 - Independent Reading, Literacy Stations, Small Groups
9:45-9:50 - Sharing time
9:50-10:00 - Word Study/Spelling (word wall, robust vocabulary, making words, phonics)
Literacy Stations
Station #1 Buddy Reading Students will buddy read and apply comprehension startegies taught during mini-lesson
Station #2 Independent Reading - Students will read independently and practice comprehension strategy taught during mini-lesson
Station #3 Listening Station - Students will listen to the Story of the Week and complete a Journal Response Sheet.
Station #4 Computer Station Classworks, Orchard, Study Island, Other
Station #5 Poetry Station Students will read different poetry and respond in various ways.
