First grade will have Open House on Tuesday, September 1st! We will start promptly at 6:30PM. Please meet in the cafeteria for a power point presentation. Parents will then go to their child’s classroom for more information.
Monday is the first day of school! We will do lots of fun activities that will help us learn about each other, classroom rules and classroom expectations.
One new project that I am very excited about this year is Bucket Fillers. I would like to thank Mrs. Tenney for sharing her books with me
More information will be sent home. Be sure to ask your child about how they are learning to be Bucket Fillers and not Bucket Dippers.
Below info is from the creators:
What are bucket fillers?

“Bucket fillers” are those who help without being asked, give hugs and compliments, and generally spread their love and good feelings to others. The simple metaphor of a bucket helps even preschoolers understand the importance of consideration and love, particularly towards those who bully.
“Bucket dippers” rob us of happy feelings by refusing to help with a task or by saying or doing cruel things. The challenging problem of “bullying” or “bucket dipping” usually rears its ugly head in the first few weeks of school.
I have added our 1st nine weeks spelling words to SpellingCity.com. Visit the Spelling page to learn more.
I have added two important documents for download.
1. First Grade Handbook
2. My Discipline Plan

I am looking foward to the upcoming school year. I have already started getting things organized for the year. I plan on working in the classroom next week (Monday and Tuesday). I will update our classroom website throughout the year.
Below are some things that I want to work on throughout the new year:
- · Leveled classroom library * I plan to finish this next week and plan to add to it throughout the year.
- · Writers workshop * I have everything ready for this. I plan on doing this at least 3 times a week.
- · Readers workshop * this is something new I will work on this year to improve reading comprehension.
- · Literacy centers * I’ve been doing centers for 3 years now. I will continue adding new ideas.
- · Math journals * I started this last year. We read a math related book and solve a problem using manipulatives. The students then write/draw their thinking.
- · Science projects * I plan on doing meaningful units that involve lots of hands on activities.
- · Take home book buddy * I want to buy a stuffed animal that students take home and read to. It will be accompanied by a journal for responses.
- Many, many other things
I’m looking foward to meeting my new students and parents for the 2009-2010 school year!
